Box-Office update: “Up” goes the box-office

Pixar’s “Up” took top billing at the box-office this week after a series of superb reviews pushed it fully into the public’s conscience. The film managed just shy of $69 million on its opening weekend placing it a good deal higher than last week’s number one “Night at the Museum 2” which took $26 million this weekend. With the excellent reviews “Up” can expect a long life in the top 10. The question is if it will be able to hit the $200 million mark. Last week’s winner didn’t disgrace itself but the drop was heavy, probably due to the mixed vibe given out by critics. It has $105 million in the bank.

In at third the new and mostly impressive horror offering from Sam Raimi racked up $16.6 million on its opening weekend, steady but far from outstanding figures. “Drag Me to Hell” has gained a fair bit of love from critics and I can vouch for it in saying it offers a good time. Some horror fans have given it a wide berth on the grounds of the PG-13 certificate, but after good press maybe they’ll turn up next weekend. If it can reach $45 million it will have done very well. In fourth the badly reviewed “Terminator Salvation” sank heavily in its second week, managing $16 million for a $90 million total.

In fifth the excellent reboot of “Star Trek” continued to live long and prosper, now with a domestic gross of $210 million the sci-fi actioner added another $13 million this past weekend. At no.6 “Angels and Demons” caught another $11.6 million for a $106 million total. Despite bad reviews the film should clear $125 million.

At no.7 “Dance Flick” took another $4.9 million for a $20 million total, the spoof movie received better reviews than a lot of its genre kin but audiences don’t seem that excited. “X-Men: Origins – Wolverine” took another $4 million for a $171 million gross, with maybe one more week left inside the top 10 Wolverine might score $176-180. It was at no.8. In at no.9 “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” looks to have ambled out of the top 10 after a month with $50 million total, $1.9 million of which was added this week. Finally at the bottom “Obsessed” took 665K after nearly 6 weeks in the top 10. It has a domestic total of $68 million.
