“Pants On the Ground, Pants On the Ground, Talking Like A Fool With Your Pants On the Ground…”

On this Martin Luther King Day here in the U.S., perhaps the weirdest news to surface is that last week’s American Idol viral hero, General Larry Platt, is actually a well-know Atlanta figure who was in the thick of the American civil rights movement. Yes, it’s true - there’s more to Larry Platt than “Pants On The Ground.”

According to USAToday, Platt has done more than just protest people who let their trousers hang low. He was with SNCC and the SCLC, two of the main civil rights organizations of the 1960s. He got his nickname “General” from prominent leader Hosea Williams for his hard work and guts. He marched on Selma, where he took a beatding, the the article says. And in 2001, he was honored for his efforts in his home state.

On Martin Luther King Day, it’s good to recall not only King, himself, but also, athe individuals who advocated and sacrificed for equality. While we’re laughing along with the General and his many youtube riffers, let’s also applaud the man for what he did when he was a only teenager. As Del Shannon might say, Hats off to Larry.

And now, some of the man new videos of Pants On The Ground:
