Frisky Dingo: Season One

Release Date: March 25th, 2008
Running Time: 144 minutes

The Show

Adult Swim has certainly carved its own style of animated programs. Beginning with shows like Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Cartoon Network has practically trademarked comedy based on randomness. Frisky Dingo: Season One is another opportunity to put your brain on hold for ten minutes and enjoy some ludicrous, and often hilarious, comedy.

The show, from creators Matt Thompson and Adam Reed of Sealab 2021, is about the relationship between a superhero and supervillain. Billionaire Xander Crews, aka Awesome X, finds himself more occupied with the business side of being a hero than stopping evildoers. Similarly, his nemesis Killface constantly struggles to find funding to support his diabolical schemes. It is a symbiotic relationship, Awesome X needs Killface to exist to drive sales of his action figure, and Killface needs Awesome X around because the majority of his plans revolve around screwing with him in some way or another. Let the inane drama begin.

Frisky Dingo is another one of these shows that has a lightning-quick pace with its comedy, often leaving you wondering what the hell you just witnessed. The minimalist plots offer the basic structure and then the characters roll with it from there. Some of the stories include: Killface trying to figure out how to market himself; Awesome X wanting the rights to Killface’s action figure; everyone ending up hurt and spending time together in the emergency room; and a battle to the death between Killface and Awesome X.

All 13 episodes from Season One are offered: “Meet Killface,” “Meet Awesome-X,” “Pimp My Revenue,” “XPO,” “Kidnapped,” “Emergency Room,” “Meet Antagone,” “Blind Faith,” “The Odd Couple,” “Flowers of Nearl,” “The Grate Escape,” “Penultimate Fighting,” and “Thrust Issues.”

The DVD

The video is presented in 1.33:1 Full Frame. The animation is smooth and crisp with gorgeous colors and a high level of detail. No problems here.

The audio is offered in English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo with English Closed Captions. The stereo track sounds very clean, pumping the dialogue from the center channel and complementing it with the music from the sides. The balance works, even if it isn’t the most engaging mix.

The Extras

No special features are offered.

Final Thoughts

Frisky Dingo: Season One is another inane Adult Swim show, either you’ll dig it, or be completely annoyed. To each their own.
