Jericho: Can’t Let Go

(TV Editor’s Note: As you may or may not know, CBS has decided to cancel Jericho, a show resurrected last year after it was official cancelled for a first time. You may recall the nuttily successful fan nut send-in that got the network’s attention and brought the show bac.  Despite some vague qualms we had about sending in 40,000 pounds of food to protest a TV show being cancelled while there are people starving in the world (we know, other shows’ fans do it too, and  Jericho fans contribute to charities. We know. We’re just saying…) , we admired the the display of fan moxy. We admire the fan moxy again today, though, this time, we’ve already played taps for Skeet Ulrich. Anyhow, we include here the official press release from the newest fan movement: Revolution; Don’t Tread On Me. Good luck, guys. But for our part, when it comes to revolution, we’ll stick with the last few eps of John Adams.)

“How does it feel to be part of history?” Don’t Tread on Me!” It’s the new battle cry of the next Jericho fan revolution. On March 22, CBS cancelled Jericho once again, and within minutes, the fan efforts to solve the problem had kicked back into action. Jericho, a CBS program that started September 20, 2006, had been cancelled once before, but was brought back when one of the characters, Jake Green (Skeet Ulrich) uttered the statement ‘Nuts!” while in the heat of revolution. This, in turn inspired a fan protest that involved 40,000 pounds of nuts being sent to CBS, enabling them to reconsider the decision which in turn spawned off a 7 episode Season 2.

The Nielsen Ratings were not high enough to encourage CBS to buy into a season three, leading to its second cancellation days before the airing of the final episode. The final episode had been shot with two endings; a cliffhanger in the case of being picked up for another season, and what many fans deem as a cliffhanger that concluded the 7 episode arc storyline. The latter aired, and many fans were inspired further to start up the fight to preserve Jericho for another round of storytelling.

Rumors began to circulate that Carol Barbee, Executive Producer of Jericho was already circulating the show to cable networks. While the ratings for Jericho were not up to CBS’s standards, they are a great fit for Cable Networks. The eligible cable networks released through sources close to Carol Barbee and Carol Barbee herself, were Sci-Fi Network and the CW. The fans sprang into action and immediately began to send emails, letters and phone calls to these two networks.

Jericho fans, who had been keeping their abilities to make a difference warm with their $20,000 donation to the Greensburg, Kansas rebuilding fund, efforts to send DVD’s to the troops, as well as affiliations with Project Homefront, refocused their views to make a difference by preparing an organized multi-phase effort to win a new home for their show, and to set up an alternate rally point online in the case the CBS Internet Website went down.
